I urge, then, first of all, [pray] for… kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness… 1 Tim 2:1-3
Dear Praying Friends,
President Herbert Hoover was a good man, but faced Black Friday and the Great Depression only months into his presidency. By 1932, Americans wanted change and elected Franklin Delano Roosevelt to replace Hoover. A Christian and conservative, Hoover enacted policies Roosevelt kept and which were successful. Roosevelt got the credit. Seeds of socialism were sprouting across Europe and the U.S. when Herbert Hoover declared:
I have witnessed the legacy of war in doubting minds, brutality, crime and debased morals. Moreover, I have witnessed on the ground in 20 nations the workings of the philosophy of that anti-Christ, Karl Marx. After these long years and from all these experiences, there rises constantly in my mind the forces which make for progress and those which may corrode away the safeguards of freedom in America… Our Founding Fathers did not invent the priceless boon of individual freedom and respect for the dignity of men. That great gift to mankind sprang from the Creator and not from governments.
The Founding Fathers, with superb genius, welded together the safeguards of these freedoms… Today the Socialist virus and poison gas generated by Karl Marx and Friedreich Engels have spread into every nation on the earth. Their dogma is absolute materialism which defies truth and religious faith. Their poisons are of many sorts. The preservation of the safeguards of liberty makes it imperative that we give heed to their every variety…
A nation is strong or weak; it thrives or perishes upon what it believes to be true. If our youth are rightly instructed in the faith of our fathers; in the traditions of our country; in the dignity of each individual man, then our power will be stronger than any weapon of destruction that man can devise… As to this whole gamut of Socialist infections, I say… God has blessed us with another wonderful word–heritage. The great documents of that heritage are not from Karl Marx. They are from the Bible, the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution of the United States. Within them alone can the safeguards of freedom survive… (Ground on Which We Stand: Basic Documents of American History, L.W. Kay, Editor, 1969).
Ronald Reagan saw struggle with socialism as a spiritual battle between freedom and slavery.
“It is the oldest struggle of human kind” a “simple struggle between those of us who believe that man has the dignity and sacred right and the ability to choose and shape his own destiny and those who do not so believe.” He [spoke of] “creeping socialism” in America: “This irreconcilable conflict is between those who believe in the sanctity of individual freedom and those who believe in the supremacy of the state”… [Of his early encounter with communism in Hollywood, he said], “In a phase of this struggle not widely known, some of us came toe to toe with this enemy, this evil force in our own community…and make no mistake about it, this is an evil force”… (Paul Kengor, God and Ronald Reagan, (2009).
Obamacare/Government Shutdown - Non-essential services and agencies of the federal government have been “shut down” since midnight Monday after the Senate rejected the House Continuing Resolution to temporarily fund the federal government but not Obamacare. The Senate sent the bill back with Obamacare reinstated. The House then modified the bill to delay Obamacare for 1 year and to end an exemption for Congress, the President and Vice President and their staffs, from the full force of the law. The Senate again rejected the bill and sent it back to the House. Liberals are decrying the poor who will go hungry, etc. Not true. Essential services will continue and government workers will survive. After the last significant “shutdown” (21 days beginning in December 1995), President Bill Clinton and Congress were able to find a compromise and government workers who lost wages were reimbursed.
Under our Constitution, laws authorizing the expenditure of funds must originate in the House. This was intended to check power in both the Executive Branch and Senate. Elected every two years, House members represent the most recently expressed will of their constituents. If a law is enacted that a majority of Americans oppose, every two years, the people can elect representatives who have power collectively to halt their implementation. If a President and a Congress pass a law that is obnoxious to the People, they can express their displeasure at the polls, and act quickly to defund the onerous law, preventing its execution. We need to thank God often for the wisdom of our Founding Fathers expressed in our Constitution!
Two measures that FRC has lobbied persistently for inclusion in the House Bill are absent from the present version: 1) to exclude federal funding of abortion from any measure that subsidizes insurance for the White House or Congressional staffs, and, 2) to eliminate the “HHS Mandate” which requires employers to provide their employees insurance that covers abortions, free sterilization, contraception and abortifacient morning-after pills.
Liberals blame conservatives for the “shut down,” but 100 members of the House were sent to Congress in 2010 with a mandate from voters to stop Obamacare. And all took the oath of office to uphold the Constitution. These good men and women are faced with a dilemma – give in to political pressure or vote according to conscience before God and the will of the people they represent. For others, this is a war for the soul of America — the forces of socialism that Herbert Hoover, Ronald Reagan and others saw as Evil vs. American Liberty.
- May God bend wills in the House and Senate to honor the will of the American People and, as President Hoover declared, the Bible, the Declaration and the Constitution. May God intervene to safeguard American liberty for the sake of the Gospel. May pastors preach and God’s people stand for what is right. May they encourage their leaders to do so, whatever the cost. The testing of God-fearing Americans will only increase. May God help each of us to know how we must stand! (Dt 26:6-9; Is 48:10; Jer 9:3-9; Eze 46:18; Rom 14:11; Gal 5:1; Heb 11:24-26; Jas 5:10-11)
Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA) – Homosexual activist groups and the media are gleeful in their discussion of ENDA. Justice Anthony Kennedy, who wrote for the majority in the Windsor case (DOMA), gave them cause. He wrote that the bipartisan Congressional majority that enacted DOMA in 1996 was motivated by “improper animus… desire to harm a politically unpopular group…” He went on: “The avowed purpose and practical effect of the law…are to impose a disadvantage, a separate status, and so a stigma upon all who enter into same-sex marriages made lawful by the unquestioned authority of the States.” ENDA passed out of the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee in July, and could come to the Senate Floor any time. Ted Olson and David Boies, the elite lawyers who championed the overturn of California’s Marriage Amendment, have engaged to overturn the Commonwealth of Virginia’s Marriage Amendment. Olson has also endorsed a federal ENDA. This immoral and irrational reasoning is going to continue to advance until we have restrained it with Biblical, Spirit inspired and empowered prayer (Virginia, ENDA in U.S. Senate, DOMA 1, 2, 3).
- May God’s people pray and fast for God to excise the root of our nation’s sexual immorality, extreme as it has become. May believers repent and show zeal for God’s honor that overshadows the activists who seek special legal status and benefits for what the Bible calls abomination. May ENDA be stopped in its tracks! (Lev 18:22; 19:15; Ex 20:14; Ps 26:8-11; Mt 12:28-29; 15:8; 16:19; 18:18; 17:21
Finally, the shock has not yet subsided from President Obama’s announcement that he has opened negotiations with Iran, in many ways leaving our ##1 ally, Israel, hanging in the wind. Unite with us and believers around the world, October 6, to Pray for the Peace of Jerusalem. Also on the 6th, pray for the Life Chain! The Values Voter Summit is one week away. If there is any way you can come, it will be worth whatever sacrifice you must make. If you do, visit us in the Prayer Room. Thanks for praying!
